Getting around Grenada - Sailing guide for Grenada

Port Louis Marina Grenada Port Louis GrenadaPort Louis is set to be become a Mecca for the aficionado.
Peter de Savary with his many years of experience establishing clubs and resorts around the world has recognised a yet untapped opportunity on the unspoilt island of Grenada. As Chairman and Founder of Port Louis, de Savary will oversee the entire US$500 Million project.
Inviting a number of joint venture partners, he stresses the importance of the vibrant and international identity of Port Louis through its marketing focus.
The new community will capture the warmth, charm and spirit of Grenada.

Port Louis developers say when the Port Louis Marina is completed the area will be heavily populated with hundreds of luxury yachts.
These luxury yachts they say will bring some of the world's most sought after tourists to Grenada.
They say that Port Louis will provide the perfect setting for staging some of the most exclusive events and open many doors for the country in Yachting and Tourism.

The Yacht SavvyPeter De Savary owns a large yacht.
The Savvy was built in 1966 and was completely rebuilt and refitted between 2002 and 2004.
It is described as a gentleman's ocean going classic yacht for worldwide cruising.
It features four en-suite luxurious staterooms to entertain 8 guests with additional high class accommodation for its crew of up to nine.

In addition to providing a range of services to the world's most elite yachtsmen, Port Louis Marina will be the home of the soon to be opened Victory Bar and Grill.

Grenada’s location alone means that unlike most destinations, this is a ‘year-round’ getaway, set outside the seasonal hurricane belt.

Port Louis Marina GrenadaIts proximity to the Equator ensures a year-round climate in the early 80’s (23-28 degrees C) which, with cooling trade winds, offers very comfortable conditions. It compares especially well with the northern Caribbean which can suffer from quite cold and wet weather and which is within the hurricane belt.

Grenadians have chosen to retain the best of their strong French and British influences whilst preserving all that is distinctive from their own West Indian heritage. Facilities are modern and efficient as can be expected from such a progressive country, built today on education and stability.

Port Louis itself is spectacularly set and is definitely the “St Trop” or the “Portofino” of the Caribbean.
The headland rises high above the picturesque and colourful capital of St. George’s and development is underway to create a new and vibrant ‘mediterranesque’ village community which will appeal to an international and diverse clientele.

Port Louis

The village will offer a wide range of options for investors, holidaymakers, yachtsmen and prospective homeowners. Designated a free-port by the Grenadian Government, Port Louis will provide duty-free shopping, a magnet for retailers and shoppers alike!

Offering magnificent views to the north lie the historic Fort and the restored Georgian buildings of St George’s; to the east is The Carenage with its exotic waterfront adjoining the natural lagoon, forming a perfect safe haven for yachts in the new marina. To the west you will see some of the most breathtaking sunsets over the crystal-clear, sparkling azure waters of the Caribbean from the alluring shores of Port Louis’ Pandy Beach whilst to the south lies the white sandy shore of Grand Anse Beach.

Port Louis will evolve as a complete village and one of the focal points will be the rebirth of a five star landmark hotel, “The Islander” (which may be known to older locals by its original name the “The Santa Maria”). In the 1950’s this world famous property was a huge draw for the discerning and also the location for the movie “Island In The Sun” with James Mason, Harry Belafonte and Joan Collins to name but a few. The hotel exuded a warmth and style that was typical of the West Indies and the charming hotels of yesteryear. The new hotel on Pandy Beach will be of exquisite design and style and of an exceptional international standard.

Two or three more contemporary, boutique hotels are also planned within the maritime village offering a variety of styles and price points.

Fred Mittermeir When North Carolina yachtsman Fred Mittermeir came calling on Grenada he became the first to officially moor a yacht at the new Port Louis Marina in Grenada.
Fred sailed his yacht, the Rhapsody from St Maarten to Grenada and has chosen to spend the next four months at the new Port Louis Marina. Fred and his wife are by no means visiting Grenada for the first time but are indeed the first customers of the new berthing facilities at Port Louis.

Marina and Village Manager Danny Donelan and Harbour master Junior Cuffie were on hand to welcome Fred to Port Louis and to Grenada as they sailed the 58 foot Rhapsody into the Port Louis marina.
Fred expressed excitement over being first to drop anchor at the new facilities and commented on the excellent work in progress by the Port Louis team to create the new marina. "I feel at home already," said Fred as he disembarked to have a drink at the new Victory Bar. " This marina is one of the most beautiful I have seen, I look forward to my holiday here and indeed to spending Christmas in Grenada," Fred remarked.

Marina and Village Manager Danny Donelan commented on what he termed a new form of niche tourism for Grenada. "The yachting sector is one of the fastest growing tourism markets. We at Port Louis Grenada intend to capitalize on that niche by providing the best service to our visiting yachter. The Port Louis marina development will preserve the natural beauty of the area while providing some of the best facilities for all types of yachts, their owners and the residents of the village. I am excited that we have just welcomed our first customer, said Donelan.

The Port Louis Marina has opened now, and all other vessels that continue to anchor in the lagoon waters can continue to do so at their own risk until Port Louis deems the area safe by completing a full dredging of the seabed.

PDS

As the Port Louis marina develops a number of special activities are being planned.
These include a special Christmas programme, unique entertainment at the victory bar and many other special offers.
