![]() High on beautiful Morne Jaloux ridge lie the spectacular Grenadian forts: a truly panoramic view of St. George’s town, portions of the breathtaking east coast, majestic mountains, lush green valleys, and the tropical rainforests of the interior. Take a journey back into Grenadian history and learn about the French colonial powers that built the fort in 1779. Many visitors and locals state that Fort Frederick is the most attractive and best-preserved fort in Grenada. The commanding view from the fort made it possible for troops to observe ships approaching from great distances; therefore, the fort was the principal battery with the heaviest firepower on the island. Just beside Fort Frederick lie the intricate ruins of Fort Matthew.
The fort, built by the French in 1779 and still in use by the Grenada's armed forces in 1983, was targeted for bombardment by U.S. forces during the U.S.-led invasion of the island on October 25 of that year. In July 1779 the British were attacked by the French General d'Estaing.
