Saline Island Carriacou - Grenada Carriacou and Petite Martinique Places On Carriacou

Saline Island got it's name from the salt ponds.
This privately owned island has a large lagoon where the seawater evaporates and as result leaves a salty crust which in old days was collected for household use.
There is a small fortification on the north side of Saline Island , but it is not in use and now derelict.

Close to this building the yachts can anchor in relative safety in a bay with a sandy bottom with reasonable hold.
From here it is easier and safer to reach White Island with a dinghy, since the reefs of White Island present a danger for sailboats.
Monohulls and Catamarans alike should be very carefull when approaching Saline and its sisterWhite Island.

Saline Island and White Island present examples of fascinating geology.
Columnar jointing of the rock formations indicate major volcanic activity.
Saline Island has a brackish lagoon salt pond surrounded by a mangrove ecosystem.
Saline Island is surrounded by large reefs which are teeming with life.
