Saline Island got it's name from the salt ponds. This privately owned island has a large lagoon where the seawater evaporates and as result leaves a salty crust which in old days was collected for household use. There is a small fortification on the north side of Saline Island , but it is not in use and now derelict. Close to this building the yachts can anchor in relative safety in a bay with a sandy bottom with reasonable hold. From here it is easier and safer to reach White Island with a dinghy, since the reefs of White Island present a danger for sailboats. Monohulls and Catamarans alike should be very carefull when approaching Saline and its sisterWhite Island. Saline Island and White Island present examples of fascinating geology.
